International graduate students with teaching assistantships must attend an orientation program
which
typically is held in August. The orientation program introduces students to Michigan State
University, to the American university educational system, to principles of classroom teaching
and policies of the university, and to local community resources available to all students, and to
students from specific countries. In addition, all students will take a variety of tests designed to
analyze their proficiency in the English language with respect to assignment to classroom
teaching responsibilities. The SPEAK test of verbal English ability is typically offered at selected international sites in the year before arriving at MSU. For the most recent informtion about scheduled SPEAK test offerings, click here.
Following receipt of your official notification of admission to graduate study you will
receive
detailed information about the orientation program from the Office of the Provost.
Recent legislation has created additional reporting requirements for international students.
