Numerous volunteer and internship opportunities are available at Michigan State University and in the surrounding community for those interested in either helping survivors and their children after abuse has occurred, or in preventing violence against women.
MSU is the only university in the nation with an on-campus domestic violence shelter program. In addition to shelter, MSU Safe Place provides advocacy, education, and prevention services. https://www.msu.edu/~safe/
MSU’s Sexual Assault Program also has similar volunteer and internship opportunities: http://endrape.msu.edu/
For those interested in volunteering or interning at the Lansing-based domestic violence shelter program, contact EVE’s: http://www.eveinc.org/main/
The International Violence Against Women Act is a historic and unprecedented effort by the United States to address violence against women globally. It directs the U.S. government to create a comprehensive, 5-year strategy to reduce violence in 10-20 diverse countries that have severe levels of violence against women and girls. To achieve this goal, the Act authorizes more than $1 billion over 5 years in U.S. assistance to support international programs that prevent and respond to violence. The funds will go to health programs and survivor services, encourage legal accountability and a change of public attitudes, promote access to economic opportunity projects and education, and better address violence against women in humanitarian situations. The I-VAWA also makes ending violence against women and girls a top diplomatic priority. It creates an Office of Global Women’s Initiatives in the State Department to coordinate all efforts to combat violence against women. It also creates the Office of Global Women’s Development at the Agency for International Development (USAID) to integrate violence prevention programming into current foreign assistance activities, as part of overall responsibilities to coordinate all USAID programming regarding international women’s issues.
We join Amnesty International USA, Women Thrive Worldwide and the Family Violence Prevention Fund in strong support of the International Violence Against Women Act. This piece of legislation is a major step in the effort to end violence against women and girls across the globe.
