Transfer Course Tools

I'm a current MSU student. Can I take courses at other institutions? 

There are several transfer credit policies to consider and tools to check out before taking courses outside of MSU. 

Key policies (from the MSU Academic Programs Catalog) include:

• Up to 60 credits may be transferred from two-year institutions.
• No more than 10 of your last 30 credits may be transferred without prior approval (usually reserved for study abroad seniors).
• Only courses with a 2.0 or higher are eligible for transfer.
• After completing the course, send your final transcript to MSU.

Transfer MSU is your starting point for planning transfer courses.

• By institution: allows you to browse courses already approved from a specific school.
• By MSU courses: helps you find equivalent courses at another institution.
• By University Requirement: this list is for students who have never attended MSU.
• If a course isn’t listed, it may not be evaluated yet.
  • If you are looking up a non-PSY course and it is not listed, you need to contact the department at MSU that would teach a similar course.
  • If you are looking up a PSY course and it is not listed, please read the instructions below in the next section.

Planning to take a Psychology course elsewhere that isn’t listed on Transfer MSU? 

Current MSU students can request a pre-evaluation following the steps below. New students to MSU use the Transfer Evaluation Syllabi Request System for evaluation of courses taken.

Step 1: Check Transfer MSU

• Search for the course at Transfer MSU.
• If it’s listed, follow the existing equivalency (make sure to check that evaluation is current. This will be noted to the right of the course equivalency).
• If not, continue to Step 2.

Step 2: Gather course information

• Try to obtain a course syllabus (preferred) or detailed course description from the institution offering the course.

Step 3: Submit for pre-evaluation (PSY courses only)

• Email the materials to the Director of Advising and Undergraduate Services, Sarah Handspike (meadsara@msu.edu), with the subject title "Psychology Transfer Course Evaluation Request".
• Please allow at least 4 to 6 weeks for your request to be processed. If you need a request processed sooner, please indicate your timeline in the email and we will accommodate where possible.

Students are strongly encouraged to make an appointment with a PSY advisor to discuss transfer credits intended to meet degree requirements.
