How has ADP impacted you?
The most impactful thing in ADP has been my expanse of knowledge in this area. There were a lot of concepts I thought I knew going into this class, but I was quickly humbled. A lot of people, including myself, go into this program with the idea that you will be able to fix everything for the kid that you’re paired with, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. I am grateful for the way Sean Hankins and Emily SF Zagurny teach this program, it truly helps create amazing advocates!
You can tell that Sean is dedicated to helping every student that comes through ADP. I am now planning to go into health policy and am very excited for what's to come!
Have any moments stood out to you throughout this program?
Many moments during the program have stood out to me, but I believe the most impactful has been hearing from my classmates and students about their youths. I'm reminded of the challenges many children face, at a time when they should just be kids. In these moments, I felt incredibly grateful for this program and its ability to offer kids a sense of support and encouragement. The realization that they have someone on their side can truly make a difference in their lives.
What has it meant to be a part of this program?
To me, this program is a chance to make real change. Every student who has gone through this program is given the ability to make a lasting impact on a youth’s life. It serves as a platform to be a catalyst for positive transformation within the Lansing community. I am proud to have been a part of this program, and I will continue to apply the skills and insights I have gained throughout my experiences in life.
Do you have any advice for psychology majors considering joining ADP?
Do it! It might feel intimidating, but the only way to grow as both a student and a person is by stepping outside your comfort zone. This program is also a great choice if you're considering it as a potential career path. It will help you determine whether it’s truly the right fit for you or if it’s not quite what you expected. Either way, you will learn more about yourself and gain valuable insight by seeing the world through a different lens.
