Additional Major vs. Second Degree
There are two ways to pursue psychology alongside your current major:
Additional Major (Most Common)
- Complete one bachelor’s degree with two majors (120 credits minimum).
- Requires a minimum of 31 credits in Psychology.
- Both majors will appear on your transcript.
- You will receive one diploma that lists your primary major.
Second Degree
- Complete two separate bachelor’s degrees (150 credits minimum).
- May include additional college or department requirements.
- You will receive two diplomas.
What to Consider Before Adding Psychology
Adding a second major is an exciting opportunity, but it’s important to plan ahead.
Time to Degree
Adding Psychology may extend your graduation timeline depending on your current credits.
- It typically takes at least 4 semesters to complete PSY major requirements.
- All PSY majors must complete algebra (MTH 103 or MTH 103B) as a prerequisite for key PSY courses.
- A PSY advisor can help you map out how this fits into your plan.
BA or BS in Psychology (Second Degree Only)
All students who complete a PSY degree must choose between a Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS).
Both degrees prepare you for careers and graduate school. There’s no “better” option—just the one that fits you best.
BA in Psychology may be a good fit if you:
- Enjoy writing, discussion, and big-picture thinking.
- Are interested in people, culture, and social systems.
- Want more flexibility to explore minors, study abroad, or multiple interests.
BS in Psychology may be a good fit if you:
- Enjoy biology, math, or science courses.
- Are interested in research or lab work.
- Are considering pre-health paths (pre-med, pre-PA, etc.).
- Want to explore areas like neuroscience or cognition.
What matters most: choose the path where you’ll stay engaged and do your best academically.
