About
Our Mission
The Department of Psychology at Michigan State University is dedicated to advancing psychological science through multidisciplinary research and providing a world-class education for our undergraduate and graduate students. As part of the College of Social Science at a land grant university, our department’s broader mission is to conduct research that transforms lives and inspires leaders on our campus, in Michigan communities, and across the world.
Access, opportunity, and excellence
As an educational department and a place of employment and research, the Department of Psychology is committed to creating clear and open pathways for all students, staff, and faculty to work, learn, and succeed at MSU. We believe access, opportunity and excellence are integral to this mission and the foundation of our success. Together, they ensure that every member of our community has the support and tools they need to thrive.

Departmental Research Areas
Research in the Department of Psychology focuses on understanding human beings— from the brain, the mind, and the person to how group and cultural identities, community context, and organizations impact a person. We offer six areas of research for on-campus graduate learning, and online programs in both Work and Organizational Psychology (coming August 2025) and Program Evaluation.
