RESEARCH INTERESTS

I investigate the role that birth plays in brain and behavioral development. Birth is arguably the most dramatic event in the life of a placental mammal, yet, perhaps because of its ubiquity, has been overlooked as an important orchestrator of brain development. To address this, my lab manipulates events and milestones associated with birth in our animal model: the mouse. Current projects in the lab include investigating the effects of the microbiota (the microorganisms that inhabit all our body surfaces with access to the outside) and birth mode (Cesarean vs. vaginal birth) on brain development.
