Social Science student Brennan Haugen earns 2023 Mitchell Scholarship Nomination

September 27, 2023 - Emily Jodway

Brennan Haugen, a Psychology student in the College of Social Science, was one of two Michigan State students nominated for this year's Mitchell Scholarship. The scholarship supports students attending graduate school in Ireland.

Haugen, an Honors College senior hailing from Battle Creek, is also majoring in Human Biology in the College of Natural Science. Haugen also made the list of nominees for the 2023 Marshall Scholarship, which supports graduate studies in the United Kingdom. Along with Haugen, senior Ethan Biederman (International Relations, Comparative Cultures and Politics, Arabic) of Beverly Hills, Michigan was nominated.

The US-Ireland Alliance established the George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program, which allows 12 future American leaders to pursue a year of graduate study in Ireland and Northern Ireland. MSU has produced six Mitchell Scholars since its inception in 1998. Last year's nominee was fellow social scientist Macken Keefe, who graduated with degrees in Political Science and Global and International Studies.

The results of this competition will be determined in the coming months.

The Distinguished Student Awards Office (formerly National/International Fellowships and Scholarships Office), administered by the Honors College, helps undergraduate and graduate students pursue major national and international opportunities by providing information and direct support throughout the competitive application processes.
