Meet Emma Crumby, an incoming graduate student in the Clinical Science research area.

Name: Emma Crumby (she/they)

Hometown: Cumming, GA

Education: I have a B.S. in Psychology from Georgia College & State University

Tell us about your background/experience.

I fell in love with psych research in undergrad when I joined a cognitive psych lab that studied false memories. I was in that lab for about 2 years and I briefly worked in a lab that studied eating and body image, which had always fascinated me. After undergrad, I've been continuing that work as a research coordinator in the Eating Anxiety Treatment Lab at the University of Louisville, coordinating an eating disorder treatment trial while working on my own independent projects as well. I've been at the EAT Lab about 2 and a half years and I'm excited to continue my research journey at MSU!

Why grad school?

My goal going into grad school is to learn how to be a great researcher and clinician. Also, I'm incredibly excited to develop my own line of research under the mentorship of my stellar graduate advisor, Dr. Blair Burnette, while collaborating with other awesome researchers.

What do you hope to research while you're here?

I'm interested in eating disorders and the way people experience their own bodies, especially marginalized populations. Ultimately, I want to improve eating disorder treatment and prevention for everyone and not just a privileged few.

What do you love about Clinical Science?

I really enjoy attempting to pinpoint and quantify sometimes murky yet very real human experiences, always with the goal of improving the lives of folks who struggle with eating disorders and disordered eating. Also, I believe we have an opportunity to make real change in how we treat and prevent mental health disorders through research and I'm excited to try to do that with passionate, like-minded people.

In your free time, what do you like to do?

I love lifting weights, reading (especially horror novels), and hanging out with my partner and our cats!
