Meet Lakeia Alasad-Craig, the vice president of the MSU Black Girls in Social Science Club, a group formed in 2023 that brings together a community of Black women in the College of Social Science. Lakeia is pursuing a psychology degree with a minor in African American & African Studies. Lakeia shared recently about the Black Girls in Social Science Club, what new members can expect this year, and more!
Why Psychology? What do you love about it?
I’ve had a passion for psychology since the beginning of my high school career, I’ve always known I wanted to pursue a career in helping others. I love being able to learn about the human mind and why people act/react the way they do.
Can you tell me about the Black Girls in Social Science?
Black Girls in Social Science was founded on the campus of Michigan State University on June 30th, 2023. We aim to bring together a community of Black women within the College of Social Science and provide a safe space for us to find and support one another, find resources, and bring together a community for us. We’re fostering and encouraging an inclusive environment to help see all Black girls succeed socially.
What could a new member expect out of BGSS this year?
We host many events such as general body meetings, Wellness Wednesdays, hustle nights, study tables, bake sales, etc. Current members and interested students can look forward to our upcoming Welcome Week, taking place from September 23-27, we will be hosting several events throughout the week. More information will be posted on our Instagram @BGSSMSU.
What are you looking forward to this academic year?
During this semester, I hope to secure an internship so I can start working in my field. I’m really interested in working in a private practice. If I am offered the opportunity, the experience will be worth it.
Want to give a shoutout to anyone at MSU that has helped you along the way?
I would like to give a shout out to the advisors over the Detroit M.A.D.E program here at MSU, they have helped my transition to/in college much smoother.
What are your hopes for the future?
I’m looking forward to graduating in a couple years and continuing my education at grad school, in hopes to one day become a clinical psychologist!
