Dr. Navarrete was a devoted scholar, educator, and researcher, whose work shaped the lives of many students and colleagues.  He earned his PhD in biological anthropology at UCLA in 2004 before working as a postdoctoral fellow in psychology at Harvard. In 2007, Dr. Navarrete joined the faculty at Michigan State in the social/personality research area where he directed the Morality & Intergroup Relations Lab.

His research touched on broad existential questions of social life, such as the psychology of good and evil and the human penchant for tribal conflict. He explored the intersection of biology, culture, and human behavior, focusing on intergroup conflict, morality, and social dynamics. He was particularly interested in understanding the emergence of biases and inconsistencies in moral and political judgement.

Dr. Navarrete had a passion for teaching. During his tenure at Michigan State, he was known for bringing energy and clarity to his lectures and building an environment where students felt challenged and supported. Many students remember Dr. Navarrete for his mentorship and his genuine care for their success.

He also modeled a life of constant learning; he was naturally curious, always questioning the world around him. He was bilingual and traveled the world to learn about new places and meet new people.

"I always admired Carlos’ enthusiasm for tackling difficult, complex, and controversial questions with clarity and honesty. His smile and deep laugh will be missed,” said colleague Dr. Joseph Cesario.

A celebration of his life will be held at First United Methodist Church (15701 Hill Street, La Puente, CA 91744) on January 17, 1-4PM.
