RESEARCH

Ignacio Acevedo is an Associate Professor in the community psychology PhD program at Michigan State University, where he also serves on the faculty of the American Indian and Indigenous Studies, Chicano/Latino Studies, and Latin American and Caribbean Studies programs.

Originally from Mexico and of mestize (Hñähñu, Binnizá, and european) descent, his current research spans two areas. First, applied research on adolescent sociopolitical development (e.g., how to promote community engagement).  Second, applied research focused on the promotion of Indigenous languages and cultural practices (with a particular focus on Hñähñu language and culture).

He is a lifetime member of the Society of Indian Psychologists (SIP) and the National Latinx Psychological Association (NLPA), and coordinates study groups on indigenous and decolonial psychology within the latter organization. He has served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Latinx Psychology Journal and is a recipient of NLPA's Distinguished Early Career Award. Dr. Acevedo is a Co-Director of MSU's International Engagement in Mexico program and a lead faculty of MSU's International Engagement with Indigenous Communities summer program.
