Student Admissions, Outcomes, and Other Data

We feel fortunate to have an outstanding student body that is actively engaged in all aspects of clinical science. The quality of our students is evidenced by their excellent undergraduate academic records and high-level of research productivity and their success on the internship and job market. 

The students we have admitted over the past five years have been quite strong in terms of their GRE scores and GPAs. Our students are graduates of top universities and colleges around the U.S. (e.g., Harvard University, Emory University, Northwestern University, Cornell University, Kenyon College, Dartmouth College, Stanford University) and the world (e.g., McGill University). Many of them come with several years of research experience, including a senior thesis and/or post-baccalaureate research assistant positions. In addition, they frequently have presentations or publications with their undergraduate advisors/mentors after college. These projects have been published in outlets such as Psychophysiology, Behavior Modification, and the International Journal of Eating Disorders, and have been presented at conferences for the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies Conference, the Society for Research in Child Development Meeting, the American Psychological Association Annual Meeting, the Society for Personality Assessment, the International Meeting for Autism Research, and the Academy for Eating Disorders Annual Meeting. The excellence of our students is further demonstrated through their success while they are in our program. All of our students are active in presenting at national and international conferences and publishing their research. 

Our students also develop clinical excellence during their training, as evidenced by our 100% match rate to American Psychological Association (APA) accredited APPIC internships for the past 14 years. Our students have matched to highly selective and prestigious internships, including programs at the University of Washington, McLean Hospital/Harvard University Medical School, Yale University Medical School, and Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic/University of Pittsburgh Medical School. 

Finally, our students also successfully complete our program in a timely manner and are employed in a range of clinical science positions after graduation. In the past 5 years, our modal completion time to Ph.D. has been 6 years, with ~76% of our students graduating in 6 years and another 23% graduating in 7 years. Almost all of our students spend 5 years in residence at MSU and then spend their 6th year at their internship site. Our students typically complete their dissertation defense in the summer before leaving on internship or during the fall or spring term of their 6th year while on internship. We require completion of the dissertation proposal by September of their 5th year (for more information on these timelines, please refer to the handbooks) and thus, students have ample opportunity to complete data collection and analysis prior to their departure for internship. 

Following graduation, our students are employed in a range of clinical science jobs including clinic director positions and postdoctoral or faculty positions in academic settings (e.g., Columbia University Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard University Medical School, McGill University, University of Chicago, University of Iowa, University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Rush University Medical Center, McLean Hospital, and Universidad de Monterrey).

Students with M.A. earned elsewhere

If the student completed an acceptable research thesis in psychology as part of master's work at another institution, the program will review whether the MA can be transferred. The advisor and one other clinical faculty member will be asked to judge whether the previous work qualifies or whether the student needs to demonstrate additional research competence at the MA level. If approved, a copy of the thesis and a letter documenting the faculty's judgment of acceptability must be filed in the Department Graduate Office by the student. 

Students with MA earned elsewhere who did not complete a data-based thesis as part of their prior master's work, or whose previous thesis work is judged not acceptable, must demonstrate research competence. This is usually a thesis-equivalency project completed during the first year that the student is enrolled in the clinical psychology graduate program at MSU. The DCT and advisor will also examine coursework from the prior MA degree to determine its equivalence to the coursework in the program. The student’s timeline in the program may be shortened if they have a thesis and coursework that is deemed equivalent.

Tuition and Fees

Students who receive assistantships or fellowships can expect to have their tuition waived. Tuition rates are as follows: $6,305.50 in-state; $12,371.50 out-of-state.  Health insurance and fees are also covered by the waiver.

Assistantships and fellowships

Teaching and research assistantships currently pay a stipend of $16,459 for the academic year.  Research assistantships often continue through the summer, with additional pay for the summer term. MSU fellowships currently pay a stipend of $27,000 for the full calendar year.

*The percent licensed is computed using surveys completed by recent graduates of MSU's Clinical Psychology Ph.D. program. The percent of licensed graduates is in line with the program goals and objectives. Some of our graduates have obtained academic or policy-making positions where licensure is not necessary to perform their duties. Graduates from our program who wish to become licensed to practice psychotherapy, perform clinical assessments, or become consultants, have been able in all cases to do so.
